IELTS

The IELTS, abbreviation short for the International English Language Testing System, is the comprehensive and widely sought after English language proficiency tests held globally. Around 10,000+ organizations worldwide seek the IELTS certification, and this test is widely recognized by reputed educational institutes, employers, world governments, and professional corporations. The IELTS test is developed by global language experts and tests the complete range of English skills required for studies and placement abroad. It is collaboratively owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English organizations.

There are two premier IELTS tests:

  • IELTS Academic: This test evaluates the English language efficiency for an academic environment.
  • IELTS General Training: This test measures the English language efficiency in a regular practical environment. 

The IELTS tests comprises of the following modules:

  • Listening: The listening test takes around 30 minutes, where the candidate gets additional 10 minutes to submit their answers. In this test, the candidate listens to four recorded texts, good monologues, and conversations among native speakers. The candidate has to submit then their answers to questions based on the recording. The IELTS Listening test has four recording sections to evaluate the attention and understanding capability of the candidate.
  • Reading: The IELTS reading test takes around 60 minutes and has 40 questions. The questions analyze the candidate’s reading skills of different comprehensions, gist, arguments, and opinions. The IELTS Academic Reading test consists of lengthy texts that include both descriptive and factual texts. The IELTS General reading test consists of three passages wherein the candidate is assigned tasks based on the passages.
  • Writing: The IELTS Writing test takes around 60 minutes. The IELTS Academic tests include two writing tasks on academic concepts, and the IELTS General test includes tasks based on general aspects.
  • Speaking: The IELTS speaking test takes around 11- 14 minutes and is a one-to-one personal interview where the candidate’s use of spoken English is analyzed. The interview is recorded.

Suppose a person is taking the IELTS test for acquiring a visa application to work, live, or study in the United Kingdom. In that case, they might require to take the IELTS test for U.K. Visas and Immigration (UKVI) Academic or General Training test or the IELTS for Life Skills test.

GRE

The Graduate Record Examinations, or GRE in short, is a single test for Graduate and entry into Professional Schools, like Business and Law. It is a mandatory test to apply for admissions in several graduate schools across the United States and Canada. The GRE test is regularly conducted by the Educational Testing Service and started in the year 1936 by the Carnegie Foundation.

The GRE Test is the only abroad admissions test that enables the candidate to skip questions in a particular section, revert and change the answers again. It gives the student control to tackle the questions in a section that the candidate wishes to answer at first. The GRE Test analyses the thinking a candidate would do and conduct in a graduate and professional school.

The GRE test comprises of the following modules:

  • Analytical Writing: Here, the test analyses the candidate’s ability to understand complex issues, discussions, and English language ability. It requires the candidate to offer focused responses on the tasks assigned.
  • Verbal Reasoning: Here, the test analyses the candidate’s reasoning ability, perspective to different concepts and situations, and their ability to conclude the same.
  • Quantitative Reasoning: Here, the test analyses the candidate’s ability to understand and interpret any quantitative information, their problem-solving capabilities, their use of necessary skills, and their understanding of different mathematical concepts.

The GRE test is taken by prospective graduate applicants of business school worldwide who look forward to pursuing a Master’s degree, Specialized Master’s degree in business, MBA, J.D., or any doctoral degree. The scores of GRE are evaluated by admissions or fellowship panels that support the undergraduate records of a candidate, recommendation letters along with other supported qualifications for graduate-level studies.

GMAT

The GMAT, abbreviation short for the Graduate Management Admission Test, is a vital qualification test for applying to business schools. It is a multiple-choice, purely computer-based, and computer-adaptive test that is often mandatory for acquiring admission to MBA business programs globally. The exam is developed and conducted by GMAC to offer the business schools the applicants’ level of preparedness for the graduate-level academic assignments and tasks. The business schools analyze and evaluate the GMAT score of candidates, their work experience, academic profile record, and additional documents and qualifications, and assess the candidate’s readiness for the MBA program’s tiring tasks.

The GMAT exam briefly measures the candidate’s knowledge and command of basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, refined data analysis, and grammar comprehension. Additionally, it also evaluates the candidate’s ability to analyze written notes, critical thinking abilities, and problem-solving capabilities. The GMAT can be said to be primarily a test to evaluate the candidate’s critical thinking skills.

The GMAT primarily contains four sections:

  • Analytical Writing Assessment: This section analyses the candidate’s ability to comprehend concepts critically and their communication abilities.
  • Integrated Reasoning: This section analyses the candidate’s ability to assess information presented to them in different formats from across different sources. It is a way of analyzing how the candidate uses their skills to succeed and thrive in technology and data-driven scenarios.
  • Quantitative section: This section analyses the candidate’s ability to evaluate data and draw conclusions from that data with their reasoning skills. The candidate would be given problem-solving and data sufficiency tasks to solve.
  • Verbal: This section analyses the candidate’s ability to read and comprehend written material, to conduct discussions and arguments, and to correct any wrong written material as per standard English.

SAT

The Scholastic Assessment Test, or SAT exam, in short, is for students who seek admission in undergraduate schools. The exam was formerly famous as the Scholastic Aptitude Test. The test evaluates the candidate’s writing, verbal, and mathematical, analytical skills. Candidates who highly wish to pursue undergraduate courses in the United States and Canada need to take the SAT exam. The student can also opt for SAT subject tests if they are seeking admission in a specific course. The student then can choose the specific subject according to the course and acquire the SAT score to show their knowledge of the particular subject. The SAT subject tests include literature, History, Mathematics, Sciences, and Foreign Languages. 

The SAT exam is divided into three main sections with four tests and an optional fourth section called the SAT Essay. The SAT exam takes a total of 180 minutes, and the SAT Essay takes 50 minutes.

The sections of the SAT exam include the following:

  • Reading: This section has 52 questions where the candidate is given five verses and passages. The candidate has to read the assigned passages and answer the questions that follow. 
  • Writing and Language: Candidates are given 44 questions based on four passages. They need to edit and revise the passages and make corrections in grammar and comprehensions.
  • Math – No-Calculator: The candidate has to attempt 58 questions, of which 80% are MCQ, and the remaining 20% are grid-ins.
  • Math – Calculator: Candidates get 15 MCQ and five grid-in questions. They need to use the formula and references provided to solve the situations and problems assigned to them.
  • Essay (optional): This is an optional section. However, it is sought after by many colleges and institutions to understand a student’s personality closely. In this section, the student has to present an essay on the topic and the author’s evidence and reasoning conditions in the essay.

The College Board conducts the SAT, and the SAT 1 test refers to the Scholastic Assessment Test. It is a general test for evaluating a candidate’s written, verbal, and mathematical, analytical skills. The SAT 2 exam is a subject-oriented test. Students who highly wish to pursue a particular course need to take SAT 2 exam.

TOEFL

The TOEFL is a famous English language proficiency test accepted across American and Canadian universities and schools. The TOEFL tests evaluate the candidate’s understanding of English in the spoken and written form suited to the college and university surroundings. The TOEFL is conducted by ETS (Educational Testing Services). 

Students who highly wish to pursue higher studies abroad take the TOEFL test. The tests would make them eligible for many scholarships and help the candidates seeking employment opportunities abroad with their detailed visa application process. The TOEFL test is accepted in 11,000+ universities and institutions globally.

There are two main types of TOEFL test: 

  • TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test): This is the more popular test format, with around 98% of the TOEFL tests conducted worldwide in this format. 
  • TOEFL Paper-delivered test: This test is conducted in regions where there is no use of internet services. This format doesn’t have a speaking section due to technological restraints.

The College Board conducts the SAT, and the SAT 1 test refers to the Scholastic Assessment Test. It is a general test for evaluating a candidate’s written, verbal, and mathematical, analytical skills. The SAT 2 exam is a subject-oriented test. Students who highly wish to pursue a particular course need to take SAT 2 exam.

PTE

The Pearson Language Tests, a premier unit of the reputed Pearson PLC Group, conducts the PTE English proficiency test. This test evaluates the skills of the non-English native candidate for the English language. The PTE test is a purely computer-based English language exam, and the scores of the same are accepted by a majority of educational institutions worldwide. The PTE test is taken by students and candidates who seek to move abroad for studying or immigration purposes to a prominent English speaking country.

The PTE test emphasizes regular English fluency rather than any high-level English language proficiency. It evaluates a student on their ability to understand and comprehend the English language as spoken regularly.

The PTE Academic evaluates the Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking skills and capabilities of the candidates.

There are two formats of the PTE test

  • PTE Academic Test: This is a purely computerized exam with four comprehensive modules of reading, speaking and writing, and listening.
  • PTE General Test: This test collaborates six tests across levels of – A1, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Each test level has two modules, a detailed written test, and a speaking test.
